The Governor of Cross River State, Bassey Otu, has declared that his administration is carrying out a sweeping transformation of the state’s health sector, with the renovation and equipping of 82 primary health centres already underway.
Speaking in Calabar during a colloquium themed “Cross River and the People’s First Mantra: Evaluating the Impact of Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s Health Transformation Agenda,” the governor said the interventions form part of his deliberate effort to reposition healthcare delivery and make it more accessible to citizens.
Otu noted that beyond the primary level, his government is also investing in secondary healthcare facilities, ensuring that the state’s hospitals and medical infrastructure are better equipped to meet the needs of the population.
“We are renovating and fully equipping 82 Primary Health Centres across the State, distributed as follows:Abi LGA 3, Akpabuyo LGA 6, Akamkpa LGA – 4, Bakassi LGA – 3, Biase LGA – 4 and Bekwarra LGA – 3.
“Others are Boki LGA – 6, Calabar Municipality – 6, Calabar South – 7, Etung LGA – 5, Ikom LGA – 5, Obanliku LGA – 4, Obudu LGA – 4, Obubra LGA – 4, Odukpani LGA – 6, Ogoja LGA – 5, Yakurr LGA – 3 and Yala LGA – 4.
“In the Secondary Health Care subsector, we are renovating, upgrading and renovating the Dialysis Centres in General Hospitals, Calabar and Ogoja to be fully operational.
‘A new General Hospital is being constructed in Ikom while the Fistula Centre at the General Hospital, Calabar, has been equipped and is functional.
“We are reconstructing the Moribund College Hospital in Oban, Akamkpa, approval has been granted for the renovation of the Ukem Hospital in Odukpani LGA and selected facilities in Akpabuyo LGA.
“The four Colleges of Nursing and Midwifery have been equipped and fully accredited and pilot schemes which provide free medical services to pregnant women, children under five years, and citizens aged 70 and above are ongoing. In addition, the State Health Insurance Scheme is now operational,” the governor said.
He added that in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a Medical Oxygen Plant is being constructed at the General Hospitals in Calabar and Ogoja.
The governor said the theme of the colloquium is apt as it aligns perfectly with his administration’s governing mantra and promised to integrate suggestions into his health policies.
