The deplorable condition of highways in Niger State has continued to take toll on human lives as no fewer than 688 passengers have been killed in various roads crashes across the state in the last two years.
The Sector Commander, Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Aisha Sa’ad disclose this figure during a press briefing in Minna yesterday to flag off the 2025 ember months public enlightenment and sensitization campaign.
Giving the breakdown accidents, the Sector Commander pointed out that 439 persons died in 419 Road accidents which involved 3,961 people out of which 1,803 others sustained injuries in 2024 alone.
She said, “In the two quarters of this year 2025, 253 Road crashes were recovered involving 2, 522 passengers. 249 of the passengers died while 1, 272 others sustained various injuries”.
This notwithstanding, the Sector Commander explained that the statistics showed reduction in the number of crashes in the state compared to what was obtained in previous years even though she did not give figure, adding that, ”this decline in accidents is an indication that our public enlightenment and sensitization programmes are yielding successful results “.
She described the theme of this year’s ember months campaign as ” Take Responsibility for your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving” as a reinforcement of the view that human factor is one of the major causes of road crashes.
Commander Aisha Sa’ad said that FRSC have mapped out actionable measures to corb road accidents during this year’s ember months, adding that, ” this include the deployment of FRSC personnel and special marshals across major highways and crash prone corridors in the state”.
She said that mobile courts and stop-over operations are also constituted to address persistent causes of crashes such as overloading and speed violations.
