Osun election: Police warn against mayhem, urge residents to celebrate responsibly

Following the conclusion of the gubernatorial election, the Osun State Police Command has urged residents to celebrate responsibly and warned against any actions that could compromise public peace and safety.

In a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, on Sunday, the Election Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Erale Etaifo, congratulated the people of the state on the peaceful completion of the poll.

While acknowledging that citizens have a legitimate right to express joy over the election outcome, the command stressed that all celebrations must remain strictly within the bounds of the law.

“Such celebrations must be conducted within the bounds of the law and must not constitute a threat to public safety, security, lives, or property,” the statement read.

CP Etaifo specifically cautioned supporters of all political parties, particularly those celebrating victory, to exercise restraint.

He warned against actions capable of causing bodily injury, property destruction, traffic obstruction, citizen harassment, or direct confrontation with political opponents.

The police command strictly prohibited reckless driving and dangerous stunts, the discharge of firearms or use of fireworks, the brandishing of dangerous weapons, the destruction of public or private infrastructure, and violent street processions or provocative attacks on opponents.

To ensure compliance, parents, guardians, political figures, religious leaders, and community stakeholders have been urged to counsel their wards and followers to maintain order.

The command announced that security personnel have been strategically deployed across the state to preserve law and order, warning that violators who hide behind the post-election period to perpetrate crimes will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

“The command wishes to reassure the people of Osun State that their safety remains its utmost priority. Citizens are encouraged to celebrate responsibly, respect one another, and remember that no political victory is worth the loss of a life or destruction of property,” the police said.
