Six lucky indigent students of the Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Ijanikin, were recently awarded scholarship by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), at the national and the branch level of LASUED.

The award of the scholarships to the indigent students was in line with the directive of the national body of the union for all the branches to carry out the exercise as a form of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
The chairman of the screening committee, Ige Ajayi, told Daily Sun that 29 students applied online and submitted completed hard copies of application to the ASUU-LASUED secretariat.
He said nine students were shortlisted for interview and the screening committee and ASUU-LASUED executives met to pick the six indigent students for the award.
A breakdown revealed that two students got N200,000 each from ASUU national, while the remaining received N100,000 each from ASUU-LASUED branch.
In his speech, the branch chairman of ASUU-LASUED, Comrade Akolade Lapite, described the scholarship as a collective effort in supporting education and fostering academic excellence.
He said the ASUU initiative for the scholarships award was driven by the union’s unwavering commitment to empower and uplift indigent students, who face financial hardship, adding, “today, this initiative has spread its wings to LASUED, where we continue to uphold the principles of equity and access to education to all.”
Lapite announced that ASUU national, in its benevolence, awarded scholarships of N200,000 each to two indigent students in LASUED.
According to him, the scholarships are not merely financial aid, they are investments in the future leaders of the nation and ensuring that talent, as well as potential, is nurtured regardless of socio-economic background.
The chairman announced that ASUU-LASUED awarded N100, 000 scholarships to four students. He reaffirmed the commitment of the union to promoting quality education and advocate for the welfare of both students and academic staff.
His words: “The scholarships awarded are a testament to the transformative power of education and the pivotal role that ASUU plays in shaping the future of our society.”
Lapite congratulated the scholarship recipients and urged them to continue to excel and inspire others with their achievements.
He acknowledged the contributions made by members of ASUU-LASUED and urged them to continue to work together towards a brighter and inclusive future for education in the country.
Amusan Iseoluwa, in the Primary Education Studies with 3.80 CGPA, said the award is a testament to dedication, hard work and commitment to excellence in academic.
Said she: “We are proud to be the part of this prestigious institution and to have contributed to its growth and success. We hope our achievement will inspire future generations of scholars and academics to strive for excellence and make a positive impact in their respective field.
Amusan, from Ibadan in Oyo State said she would use the money to pay her tuition fee, which is the main purpose of the scholarship.
Ajetunmobi Odunayo Oluwakemisola, from the Department of Physics, lauded ASUU national for the award, stating, “I feel so good and glad to be the first among the recipients of the scholarship.”
“This serves as great opportunity to me and to people, who are having negative thought about ASUU. I want us to know that ASUU is not all about strike that we all think they are. I am also using this medium to give a special thanks to ASUU national and ASUU-LASUED chapter for giving me this scholarship,” she added.
