6 Adamawa lawmakers dump PDP, Fintiri to follow soon

The political landscape has been thrown into fresh uncertainty following the resignation of six members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmakers, who issued separate resignation letters to their respective ward chairmen and party leadership at local and state levels, cited the protracted national leadership crisis within the PDP as the primary reason for their decision.

Those who formally announced their exit from the PDP include Ahmed Jingi Belel, Deputy Majority Leader, Maiha Constituency; Mohammed Buba Jidjiwa, Deputy Speaker, Jada/Mbulo Constituency; Kefas Calvin, Toungo Constituency; Bulus Geofrey, Leko/Koma Constituency; Bulus Kantomon Naphtali, Shelleng Constituency and Makondo Pwamwakaino, Numan Constituency. In their letters, the lawmakers expressed concern over what they described as “protracted crisis at the national level,” “lingering leadership disputes,” and “internal instability” within the party.

Bulus Geofrey, in his letter to the PDP ward chairman in Koma I, stated that the national crisis has “rendered the party structure largely ineffective,” making it increasingly difficult to engage meaningfully within the party framework.

Similarly, Mohammed Buba Jidjiwa noted that after consultations with his supporters and political associates, he found it “imperative” to resign in the interest of his constituents.

Kefas Calvin of Toungo Constituency also referenced the political crisis “that has engulfed the PDP at all levels,” prompting his immediate resignation.

The coordinated exits appear far from coincidental or isolated events. Earlier this week, the Senator representing Southern Adamawa, Binos Dauda Yaroe, also resigned from the PDP, further intensifying speculation of a broader political realignment within the state.

While none of the lawmakers officially declared their next political destination, sources within the (APC) suggest that high-level consultations are ongoing which led to the postponement of the state Congress to accommodate the governor and his people.

However, the resignations came amid growing speculations that the Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has already made the move to leave PDP and that he might do so alongside members of his cabinet within the week.

An inside source within the APC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, hinted that discussions are underway regarding a possible mass defection that could significantly alter the political power structure in the state.

Although no official statement has been issued by the Governor’s office confirming such a move, political observers say the resignation of key Assembly members, including the Deputy Speaker and Deputy Majority Leader, signals a deepening shift that could reshape party dominance ahead of future electoral cycles.

The state publicity secretary of the PDP, Victor Dogo, was also quoted in a statement saying, his loyalty and that of several members of the party are with the governor and “anywhere the governor goes, they go.”

If the speculated defection of the governor materialises, it would represent one of the most consequential political realignments in the recent history of Adamawa State.

A political analyst and public commentator, Geoffrey Naphtali, who spoke to Daily Sun said, these movements suggest that the unfolding developments may, redefine majority control within the State Assembly, trigger internal restructuring within the PDP at the state level, strengthen the APC’s political foothold in the North-East, and influence 2027 electoral permutations.

For now, the PDP in Adamawa has yet to issue a comprehensive response to the wave of resignations.

As events continue to unfold, all eyes remain on Governor Fintiri and whether the political tremors currently shaking the Assembly will extend to the Government House.
