The Association of Igbo Town Unions (ASITU) has urged members to elect credible leaders during the 2027 general elections.
The association advised members to reject money politics and carefully scrutinise candidates before casting their votes. National President of ASITU, Chief Emeka Diwe, gave the charge while addressing elected members of the association in Aba, Abia State.
He said electing candidates without the capacity to deliver democratic dividends would not serve the interests of the people.
Diwe described town unions as organisations with strong grassroots presence across communities and political wards in Igboland.
“Preparation for the 2027 general elections has started. Town union members must be cautious of those who come with money to influence votes.
“You must examine candidates properly because some may not mean well for the people. We should avoid electing leaders who abandon the people immediately after elections and only return during campaigns,” he said.
He urged newly elected officials to enlighten their communities on the importance of supporting development-oriented candidates.
“Our motto is: Town Union, Development to the Grassroots. To achieve development, we must elect credible people,” he added. Diwe dismissed claims that town unions were political structures, insisting that while members may belong to political parties, the unions remain apolitical.
“Town unions can guide members on leadership choices, but they do not support political parties,” he said.
