Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national head of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the 2023 presidential candidate, says his private meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan was a courtesy call based on a long-standing personal friendship rather than discussions about a political alliance.

Kwankwaso met Makinde on Wednesday at the governor’s office during a visit to Oyo State to inaugurate the party’s new office and hold internal consultations with national officials.

Kwankwaso denied rumours that the two-hour meeting was connected to potential cross-party realignments in advance of the general election in 2027 in an interview with reporters.

“This visit is more about personal friendship than party politics,” he said.

“Governor Makinde and I have known each other for a long time. Before proceeding to our party engagement in the state, I felt it was proper to pay him a courtesy call.”

He recognised Makinde’s affiliation with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and spoke about his own political background within the party, claiming that he was one of the founding members of the PDP in 1998 and that he was elected governor of Kano State in 1999 on its platform before becoming minister of defence.

Kwankwaso went on to say that he later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) before switching to the NNPP, where he is now the national leader.

He later opened the NNPP office in Ibadan to increase the party’s visibility in the state capital before the general election in 2027.
