Activist and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) senatorial aspirant, Aisha Yesufu, has dismissed claims that the political influence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike poses a challenge to her ambition ahead of the 2027 elections, insisting that her focus is on winning the support of Abuja residents.
Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, Yesufu said she was not in political competition with appointed officials but with other candidates seeking electoral mandates.
“I don’t have a Wike to contend with because that’s an appointee. I’m not in the business of appointments. I’m in the business of looking for the mandate of the people,” she said.
The former African Democratic Congress (ADC) member stated that her immediate goal was to secure the senatorial ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) before focusing on the main election.
According to her, the people of Abuja deserve a credible political alternative capable of changing the direction of governance in the FCT.

“There are some people who have said they are going to take over Abuja and all of that. We want to give people a viable option that they can be proud of and passionate about,” she stated.
Yesufu also warned her supporters against assuming victory ahead of the party primaries, stressing that public popularity alone would not secure the ticket without active participation during the voting process.
“Yes, people may assume I already have it, but that is not enough. I need people to come out and vote during the primaries,” she added.
The activist further disclosed that she had concluded consultations and screening processes ahead of the election and expressed confidence that she would bring what she described as “a breath of fresh air” to politics if elected.
On the crisis within the ADC, Aisha Yesufu described the situation as damaging to Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that strong political parties remain essential to national development.
The race for the FCT senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections is expected to feature incumbent senator Ireti Kingibe, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, and Yesufu if she secures her party’s ticket.
