2027 election is ‘govt vs people’ – Peter Obi

By Lawrence Agbo

Former Anambra State Governor and ADC chieftain, Peter Obi, has described the 2027 general election as a direct contest between the Nigerian people and the government in power, saying the opposition is mobilising to offer citizens a united alternative.

Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS, Obi said the African Democratic Congress is working to build a broad coalition of opposition forces ahead of the polls, arguing that the country needs a strong alliance capable of challenging the ruling establishment.

According to him, growing support for the ADC reflects public dissatisfaction with the current administration and widespread concern over what he called attempts to weaken opposition parties.

“Because they know that what you’re saying or what INEC is doing is wrong. We have said we want all oppositions to come together to build one strong coalition, because election in 2027 will be the government in power versus the people. So, we are now coming to stand for the people,” Obi declared.

He explained that the coalition drive is aimed at bringing together competent and committed leaders who are willing to make sacrifices for national renewal, rather than pursue personal or transactional political interests.

“We are a coalition. For me, what I believe that Nigeria requires now is a coalition of people who are willing to sacrifice everything. It’s a coalition of competencies, coalition of capacities, coalition of people who are compassionate to tackle issues that Nigeria needs urgent attention today. That’s the primary idea of that coalition. We are no longer going to be a coalition of people who are going to share democratic dividends or transactional coalition, because there’s nothing to share any longer,” he said.

Obi added that the ADC’s objective is to unite Nigerians across party, ethnic, and religious lines in order to create a credible political force focused on rebuilding democratic institutions and addressing the country’s economic and security challenges.

“The reason why we’re divided along ethnic and religious lines is because people who are incompetent, who lack the capacity, who don’t have the compassion and commitment for a better Nigeria use tribe as their own certificate for competition.”
