Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its recent advisory to broadcasters, alleging that it is targeted at silencing opposition voices ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NBC had on Saturday cautioned media presenters against passing opinions as facts or using their platforms to intimidate guests. It also warned that, as the country approaches a crucial electoral period, broadcasters must avoid spreading misinformation.

Reacting in a post on X on Saturday night, Atiku described the advisory as “yet another troubling attempt to muzzle the media and shrink the space for free expression in Nigeria.”

He argued that Nigeria’s media sector has developed into a globally respected institution, but expressed concern that the regulator repeatedly issues “heavy-handed directives” during election periods.

“I stand firmly with Nigeria’s broadcast industry and all media platforms resisting this creeping censorship,” he stated.

Atiku further maintained that ethical journalism standards should not be selectively enforced or “weaponised during campaigns,” insisting that the timing and tone of the NBC’s directive raise deeper concerns.

He also accused the authorities of prioritising narrative control over ensuring a free and transparent electoral process.

The NBC advisory comes amid rising political activity ahead of the 2027 elections, where the ruling party is expected to field President Bola Tinubu for re-election, while opposition figures continue consultations under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition framework.
