ROTIMI AMEACHI

By Lawrence Agbo

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has stated that he will supports local government (LG) autonomy if elected president in 2027, citing his record in office as proof he would not interfere with council funds.

Amaechi spoke on Channels Tv MorningBrief in response to a question on whether he would allow local governments to receive their allocations directly without interference.

“They will tell you in Rivers State, even those who hate me know money is never my problem. I don’t talk to people about money,” Amaechi said.

“From the beginning of the day I became a governor till when I left, I never saw a local government chairman over the issue of money. I never touched their money.”

The former governor used his tenure to argue that he has no history of tampering with local government finances and would extend the same approach at the federal level.

Local government autonomy has remained a contentious issue, with councils often accusing state governments of withholding or deducting from their statutory allocations.
