A Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that two men — Abubakar Kabiru, 38, and Adamu Yakubu, 34 –be given 12 strokes of the cane for stealing a car battery.
Yakubu of Rwang Pam street and Kabiru of Bauchi road, all in Jos, had appeared before the court charged with conspiracy and theft.
The magistrate, Tijjani Zololo, gave the order after the convicts pleaded guilty to the crime and begged for leniency.
The prosecutor, Mr Chirkwak Samuel, had told the court that one Foster Lawrence of No. 11, Hill Street, Jos, had reported the matter at the `A’ Division Police Station on April 27.
Samuel said that the complainant had alleged that he returned home on the said date and discovered that the accused persons had removed the battery of his car.
He said that during police investigation, the accused persons confessed to have committed the offence, claiming that hunger had forced them to commit the offences.
The prosecutor said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
