The 2026 Ibom Open got off to an impressive start on Friday as about 160 golfers took to the lush fairways of the prestigious Ibom Golf Course in Uyo for the opening day of the tournament.
Among the notable personalities spotted on the course were former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission and former Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority.
The opening round featured competition in the Super Veterans, Veterans, Men’s Handicap 19–28, and Ladies’ Handicap 19–36 categories, with players battling the challenging layout of the championship course.
One of the participants, Louis Enuk of Aba Sports Club, expressed satisfaction with the organization of the event and the quality of the course.
“I have been hearing about the Ibom Open and felt it was time to experience it for myself. I am excited to have participated. My handicap is 28, and I found the front nine particularly challenging. I look forward to returning for the next edition,” Enuk said.
Similarly, Bessie Obei from Bonny described her experience as both challenging and exciting. While admitting that her performance may not be enough to secure a podium finish, she remained optimistic about mastering the demanding Ibom Golf Course in future outings.
A total of 350 amateur golfers registered for the 2026 Ibom Open, making it one of the biggest editions of the tournament. The competition continues through Saturday and Sunday, with participants expected from Ghana, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe.
Organizers have also announced that approximately 40 trophies will be contested, while the overall winners will receive an attractive weekend getaway package among other prizes.
As the tournament progresses, attention will shift to the remaining categories as golfers compete for honours in one of Nigeria’s premier amateur golf championships.
