The traditional ruler of Ihekwenu autonomous community, Aku, Igbo Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Christopher Okwor, has provided financial support to 100 indigents in his community.
The gesture, which is part of his annual outreach, shows his commitment to alleviating poverty and uplifting the needy within and outside his immediate community.
Speaking during the event held at his palace, Igwe Okwor explained that the initiative was motivated by his gratitude to God and his desire to impact lives positively. Each beneficiary received N10,000 to support their needs.
“Last year, we reached out to 85 people, but this year, because God has been so good to us, we extended it to 100. I’m doing this to please my God. I only have one God, and I’m doing this to honor Him. All credit belongs to God,” the Igwe said.
Reflecting on his relationship with the community, the traditional ruler highlighted his love for his people and their appreciation of his leadership.
“When Jesus Christ came to the earth, not everyone liked Him, so nobody can be a friend to everybody. If you are a friend to all, then you are not doing well. But my people are very happy with me, as you can see. What you are seeing today is something I do every year. I love my people, and they love me,” he stated.
The President-General of Ihekwenu autonomous community, Dan Ugwu, described the palliative initiative as a historic moment and commended the Igwe’s consistency despite challenges.
“What I am seeing today will go into the memory lane of our history. The Igwe has been doing this for years, even before his challenges with the state government over land matters. Regardless of these accusations, he has remained steadfast in giving palliatives to the less privileged.”
Ugwu also assured that any perceived crises in the community had been resolved. “What looked like crises have been managed and laid to rest. We are living in peace, with no friction whatsoever, and we are solidly behind our traditional ruler, who is a good man,” he added.
Former Vice Chancellor of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, praised Igwe Okwor for his philanthropic efforts, particularly during tough economic times.
“What he is doing today is marvelous. Despite economic challenges, he remembers the poor and needy in the community. No human being can be loved by everyone; you must have detractors. If you don’t have critics, then you are not doing well. But I know the traditional ruler is doing well,” Prof. Onyeji said.
The Igwe’s wife, Martina Okwor, who was also celebrated on her birthday, expressed gratitude for God’s blessings on her family.
“I’m feeling excited for the wonderful things God has done for my family. I wish all my friends and well-wishers God’s grace, and may God answer their prayers,” she said.
The event featured a communal meal and dancing.
