Zambia begins evacuation of citizens from conflict-hit Middle East

By Lawrence Agbo

Zambia Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe,  has announced that Zambia has started evacuating its citizens from Middle Eastern nations.

The government is already handling an urgent issue involving a family of five Zambians residing in the Kurdistan region of Iraq due to the worsening security situation, and arrangements have been made to enable their departure, according to the minister.

According to him, efforts are also being made to find and ascertain the status of a Zambian national who is reportedly residing in Iran.

“Through coordinated engagements between our mission in Cairo and Ankara, preparations are underway to facilitate safe transit through the nearest viable corridor, subject to prevailing security assessments,” Haimbe said in a statement released in parliament on the evolving security situation in the region.

According to Haimbe, the government has not heard of any injuries or fatalities involving Zambian citizens.

He continued by saying that Zambia has nationals in a number of the impacted nations, including professionals, diplomats, and students.

According to the minister, all Zambian embassies in the area have been instructed to submit scenario-based coastal evacuation plans, maintain continuous contact with individuals, and update and verify registries of Zambian nationals.
