From Okwe Obi, Abuja
The Global Youth Skills Acquisition and Poverty Eradication Organisation (GYSAPEO) has distributed household items to indigent widows in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of the yuletide celebration.
GYSAPEO Founder, Emmanuel Chuks Ozegbe told journalists on Friday in Abuja that the gesture was a yearly event that had spanned over 8 years.
Ozegbe disclosed that the same event was ongoing simultaneously across the country, adding that over 3000 widows had been empowered for over 8 years.
He called on other nongovernmental organisations to spread love and that traditions that put widows down should be lifted to give them a sense of belonging.
He said: “Every end of the year, we normally have this programme to celebrate the widows. We call them vulnerable.
“They need to enjoy the moment, play games with friends. We have about 150 widows here. It cost us about N4 million to package foodstuffs and to organise the party for them.
“We are giving them rice, groundnut oil and wrappers. Maltreatment and stigmatization is really bad.
“We are trying to close the gap and show good example so that other organisations can key in to what we are doing.
“We have been doing this programme for the past 8 years. In total, we have taken care of over 3000 widows.
‘Our next phase is to targeted at empowering more women farmers so enable them feed themselves and their children. We are doing it around the country.”
