Ahead of the Yuletide season, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has ramped up efforts to ensure smoother travel for Nigerians by launching Operation Connect to Your Destination (OCYD) 3.0 on the 36km Ekparakwa–Azumini–Iwukem Road in Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at the flag-off, FERMA Managing Director/CEO, Engr Chukwuemeka Agbasi, explained the initiative was crafted to ease end-of-year and festive travel woes.

As part of this intervention, 10,683 m² of potholes will be patched, 7,392 m² of failed sections repaired, and 881 m² of asphaltic overlay completed, restoring 85.9 kilometres of roadway nationwide. The programme is expected to create 1,722 jobs, highlighting its socio-economic impact.

Agbasi noted this renewal aligns with federal mandates to keep all federal roads serviceable—an urgent need, as Nigeria’s 36,000-kilometre federal road network is its most heavily used transport system.

He linked the works to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritising infrastructure revival, economic stimulation, and better mobility. FERMA is making highways safer and more motorable, contributing to the administration’s vision for an efficient, economically vibrant Nigeria.

“Operation Connect to Your Destination is designed to guarantee safe movement of commuters during the high-volume Yuletide period. It is important to ensure that travellers enjoy a smooth experience,” Agbasi said.

He affirmed FERMA’s dedication to promptly addressing troubled routes and fulfilling its mandate. “Our responsibility is to ensure that failures and distressed sections are remedied promptly. This programme lets us do that in a more targeted way.”

OCYD 3.0 extends across 39 corridors nationwide, with works underway in all 36 states, including pothole patching, repair of failed sections, and overlays to strengthen road quality.

Engr Sani Abdulkadir, Head of FERMA’s Direct Labour Unit, lauded the MD’s direction and said teams are fully mobilised and ready to deliver quality work. “Manpower, machines, and materials are already in place. We are set to deliver quality on this corridor,” Abdulkadir said, promising timely and durable results for the festive period.

“The launch of OCYD 3.0 in Akwa Ibom highlights FERMA’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s highways. Tackling critical road failures and improving connectivity and journey times, the agency continues to play a defining role in keeping federal roads motorable.”
