Yuletide: FCTA task force intensifies crackdown on thugs

Operation Sweep in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja ,has ramped up its campaign against miscreants lurking in key spots as Christmas and New Year festivities approach.

Director of the FCT Administration’s Department of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, who led the crackdown on Monday, toured Apo Bridge, Area 1 Roundabout, Julius Berger Junction, and Utako Motor Park to engage operators directly.

Represented by Olumiji Peter highlighted the FCTA’s collaboration with security outfits, including deployments to known blackspots for robust protection during the holidays. He urged motor park and event center managers to bar unidentified individuals, particularly drivers, from operating.

Gwary elaborated, “We are going round the city in continuation of the ongoing Operation Sweep, ensuring that the FCTA is rid of all miscreant and criminal elements, because this yuletide season is meant for family and friends to unite and enjoy togetherness.

“But you know, in as much as you have this, you also have the miscreants and criminal elements that also want to bring surprises.

“And the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has given a marching order to the security agencies under the Operation Sweep, that every form of criminality should be crushed accordingly.

“We are going to sustain monitoring of motor parks, dismantling illegal motor parks too, that can be used as an avenue for one chance syndicate

“The FCT Police Command has done a massive deployment already. Just like a few days ago, the Commissioner of Police, railed out the deployment order, and officers have been stationed in strategic areas”. Gwary said.

Head of the enforcement unit at the FCT Social Development Secretariat, Ukachi Adebayo, shared updates on anti-begging efforts, noting 481 individuals removed from streets in the past two weeks. “the beggars arrested are currently in our holding centre. When we apprehend, we profile, we take care of their welfare. Then we train those that want to be trained,” she said.

At Utako Motor Park, National Union of Road Transport Workers Chairman Adamu Abubakar affirmed that only verified drivers operate there and committed to ongoing checks, especially for newcomers.

He commended the task force for helping to rid the city of once chance operators.

Abubakar said that the move was helping to sanitize the operation of transport workers in the FCT.
