Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, has warned that sponsors of pilgrims who abscond during the 2025 Easter pilgrimage to the Holy Lands of Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan would be arrested and jailed.

Speaking at the pre-departure orientation programme for intending Christian pilgrims from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mahmoud urged pilgrims to focus on prayer, spiritual growth and Nigeria’s peace and development during the pilgrimage.

Describing pilgrimage as a spiritually enriching experience that offers immeasurable blessings, she acknowledged the recent geopolitical challenges in the Middle East which caused delays to the pilgrimage.

The Minister emphasised the FCT Administration’s dedication to protecting and safeguarding pilgrims’ welfare, reaffirming the government’s commitment under the leadership of the Minister, Nyesom Wike.

She stressed the consequences for those who abscond, warning, “Pilgrims’ sponsors will be arrested and jailed if their pilgrims abscond.”

Mahmoud also commended the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC) for its pivotal role in coordinating pilgrimages nationwide and pledged continued cooperation between the FCT Administration and the NCPC to ensure successful pilgrimages and the spiritual wellbeing of all participants.

Director of the FCT Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Gloria Dandam, reminded the pilgrims that pilgrimage is not only a holy trip, but also a sacred journey that would equally deepen one’s faith and strengthen relationship with God.”

She encouraged the pilgrims with these words: “As pilgrims, you are not just visiting historical landmarks; you are on a journey of renewal, reflection and redemption. You will have the opportunity to seek God’s blessings and pray for peace in our homes, country and the world. I urge you all to support and encourage one another throughout the journey. Pilgrimage is not only an individual pursuit but a collective one.”
