  • Says Primate Ayodele seeking cheap attention

The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), the umbrella body of all youth groups across the six geopolitical zones, has expressed alarm over the false forecast by Prelate Elijah Ayodele, the leader of the INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church. Ayodele had claimed that Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Gbenga Ashafa, and Chief Seyi Tinubu were not eligible to become the next Governor of Lagos State, predicting instead that Hakeem Muri-Okunola, the current principal secretary to President Bola Tinubu, would be the next governor.

A statement signed and delivered by the President General of CONYL, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, revealed that the group would have ignored Ayodele’s statement but chose to respond to prevent misleading the public and to set the record straight.

“We state categorically that Chief Seyi Tinubu is eligible, competent, well-educated, well-trained, and very experienced to become the next Governor of Lagos State in 2027. Lagosians love him dearly and will elect him as their governor.

“Prelate Ayodele is known for making false predictions, and Nigerians are not surprised that he is at it again. On 24 February 2023, he predicted that the former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, would be elected the next president of Nigeria. Did he win? The answer is a resounding no!”

CONYL urged those close to the prelate to advise him to focus on his religious duties and stop disturbing Nigerians, who have more pressing concerns, with his false forecasts.

The coalition maintained that the future leadership of Lagos State would be determined by the people’s will through a democratic process where every eligible citizen could pursue leadership roles, with voters deciding who best represents their interests. They emphasised that leadership should be based on competence, vision, and dedication to the people, rather than predictions or speculations.

“The democratic process is the cornerstone of leadership selection in our great country. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria grants every eligible citizen the right to run for public office, including the office of the Governor, as long as they meet the legal requirements.

“As a group that values individual rights and democratic principles, we believe the final decision on who becomes the Governor of Lagos State rests with the electorate. The people’s votes should be the determining factor, and all candidates who meet constitutional qualifications should be allowed to present themselves to the voters.

“We are confident that Lagos State, being a progressive and dynamic city, will continue to respect and uphold the will of the people, ensuring that leadership is based on merit, vision, and the collective aspirations of its citizens.”

The coalition added that Prelate Ayodele should openly admit his need for attention and patronage rather than hiding behind political predictions to seek it.

“We therefore call on Lagosians to ignore the false forecast of Prelate Ayodele and support Chief Seyi Tinubu, who is well-equipped and prepared to serve the good people of Lagos State with due diligence and commitment,” they urged.
