Costume designing is no easy feat, and doing this for a series that is as eagerly anticipated as Castle and Castle is almost impossible, if you aren’t Nollywood’s foremost costume designer.
With over a decade of experience under her belt, Yolanda Okereke has worked on the biggest and best Nigerian films and television shows, so when Castle & Castle Season 2 was looking to staff a Costume Designer, it was a match made in Nollywood heaven.
In Season 2 of Castle & Castle, several main characters have evolved and Yolanda’s mission was to convey their growth with her styling choices. A big ask for Yolanda was Remi Castle, played by the brilliant Dakore Egbuson-Akande. Remi Castle is a founding partner at one of Lagos’ foremost law firms, so her looks needed to convey power, control and of course her inherent sexiness. Having been privy to behind the scenes pictures and videos, we can tell you that Yolanda Okereke nailed it.
The next obstacle for Yolanda was personalizing the styles of main characters who work in a professional (law)that enforces a somewhat conversative dress code. Yolanda expertly walks the line between fact and artistic license.
Speaking on characterization, Yolanda Okereke says “The characters are in different phases in their lives, doing big and different things. I wanted a strong perception for each character when they come on the screen, so it was important to channel that in the costuming and the choices made for each of them.”
In Castle & Castle Season 2, the riveting performances and personal and professional stakes will have you hooked from the first frame till the last. But special kudos must go to the costuming, as it does a brilliant job of characterization and tone setting.
