Canada booked a historic place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio struck deep into stoppage time to seal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa at Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.
The dramatic win, secured in the 92nd minute, sent the tournament co-hosts into the knockout stage for the first time in their history, while ending South Africa’s impressive World Cup campaign.
For much of the contest, both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances in a cagey affair dominated by disciplined defending and cautious attacking play.
South Africa, who reached the knockout stage for the first time, adopted a conservative approach, while Canada found it difficult to break down Hugo Broos’ organised backline.
The breakthrough finally arrived two minutes into added time when the ball fell kindly to Eustaquio on the edge of the penalty area. The Canadian midfielder calmly drilled a low shot beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Williams had earlier produced another commanding performance between the posts for South Africa, completing a World Cup record 68 successful passes by a goalkeeper since official records began in 1966. Despite his composure in possession, he had little chance of stopping Eustaquio’s decisive strike.
South Africa offered little attacking threat throughout the encounter, finishing the match with a very low expected goals figure and managing only a handful of attempts on goal. Their best opportunity came late on when Oswin Appollis tested Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau from long range, but the effort was comfortably saved.
Canada, coached by Jesse Marsch, also found chances difficult to come by, although the introduction of captain Alphonso Davies injected greater urgency into their attack during the closing stages. The Bayern Munich full-back stretched the South African defence and helped create the pressure that eventually led to the winning goal.
The victory means Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 as they continue their remarkable World Cup journey.
For South Africa, the defeat brings an end to a memorable campaign that saw Bafana Bafana reach the knockout stage for the first time. Although their World Cup dream ended in heartbreaking fashion, their disciplined performances throughout the tournament earned widespread praise and marked another significant milestone for South African football.
