Erling Haaland announced his arrival at the FIFA World Cup in style, scoring twice to inspire Norway to a commanding 4-1 victory over Iraq in their Group I opener at Boston Stadium on Tuesday.
The Manchester City striker delivered a clinical performance on his World Cup debut as Norway secured their first World Cup victory in 28 years and moved to the top of Group I on goal difference ahead of France.
After a quiet opening period, Haaland broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, tapping home from a low cross by David Moller Wolfe to register his first-ever World Cup goal and his 51st international goal in just 56 appearances.
Iraq, however, responded strongly. Aymen Hussein brought his side level in the 39th minute with a powerful header, scoring Iraq’s first World Cup goal in 40 years and only their second in tournament history.
Just four minutes later, Haaland capitalised on a defensive error after a misplaced back pass from Zaid Tahseen, racing through to restore Norway’s lead before half-time.
The second half was more controlled, with Norway dictating possession and limiting Iraq’s attacking opportunities.
Substitute Leo Ostigard effectively sealed the result in the 76th minute when he rose unmarked to head home Martin Odegaard’s corner.
Deep into stoppage time, Norway added a fourth goal when Hussein inadvertently turned Haaland’s header into his own net.
The victory marks an impressive start for Norway, who are making their first World Cup appearance since France 1998.
Haaland, one of the favourites for the Golden Boot, once again demonstrated his remarkable ability to influence games with minimal touches, contributing two goals and playing a role in a third.
Norway now sit top of Group I after France’s 3-1 victory over Senegal earlier in the day, while Iraq will need a positive response in their next outing to keep their qualification hopes alive.
