African football has achieved a historic milestone at the ongoing FIFA World Cup, with nine of its 10 representatives progressing to the knockout stage after an impressive group-stage campaign.
The continent recorded its best-ever performance at the tournament, as 90 per cent of its participating teams secured places in the last 32, underlining Africa’s growing strength on the global football stage.
Algeria became the final African side to confirm qualification after battling to a dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria on Sunday.
The result earned the Desert Warriors enough points to advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams. Algeria finished third in Group J with four points, behind Argentina and Austria.
The only African nation to miss out on the knockout rounds was Tunisia, whose disappointing campaign ended with three defeats in three matches. Tunisia finished bottom of Group F without recording a single point.
Africa’s remarkable showing means nine teams remain in contention for World Cup glory as the competition enters its knockout phase.
