President Bola Tinubu congratulated Monday Okpebholo on his inauguration as Governor of Edo State, urging him to focus on improving the living standards of the state’s residents.
According to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Okpebholo’s victory as “a challenging call to service that demands dedication and vision.” He emphasised the importance of unity among the people, stating, “I urge you to work tirelessly to bring together all Edo people, regardless of their political affiliations, to foster development and progress in our beloved state.”
Reflecting on the transition from former Governor Godwin Obaseki, Tinubu remarked, “Edo State is rejoining the ranks of the All Progressives Congress after eight years. This is not just a change in leadership but an opportunity to restore effective governance and accountability.” He underscored the necessity of a strong legislative framework, lamenting past attempts to undermine legislative authority: “A robust and independent legislature is essential for achieving democratic good governance. We must ensure that our legislative institutions are empowered to fulfil their roles effectively.”
Tinubu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for conducting a peaceful and transparent election, stating, “I applaud the INEC for their efforts in ensuring a credible electoral process. It is vital that all parties respect the outcomes and seek legal recourse for any grievances through appropriate channels.”
He celebrated Okpebholo’s inauguration, seeing the moment as a significant step in Edo’s democratic journey, encouraging the governor to “foster true democracy and good governance throughout your tenure” and to prioritise the needs of the people.
