The former chief engineer at the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST), Razaq Lawal, has said that unless Nigeria harnesses its local building materials, the cost of buying and renting apartments will continue to increase.

Lawal who was talking to Daily Sun during the burial ceremony of his late father Monzoure Lawal in Lagos, said his father, while alive, encouraged his children to always mix local building materials with a little of the foreign ones so that in the event of no foreign ones, they won’t be stranded.

He said that the death of his father has taught him a lot of things he did not pick while he was alive. “The death of  my father, the Baale Ago-Ijebu Ijero, Ebute-Metta (West), Lagos, is a great loss to our community. As a leader, he was the epicenter of all the activities within and around the community such that the moment the community was about to have a Baale, a voice from the crowd rose and shouted that a golden fish has no hiding place and pointed to him as the one most qualified for the job. Before his death, my father supported promulgation of laws encouraging the use of local building materials in building construction,” he said.
