Wimbledon 2017 final : SISTERS ACT
- Serena to provide cheat codes for Venus on Muguruza
Venus Williams will get cheat codes from pregnant sister Serena Williams on Garbine Muguruza ahead of today’s Wimbledon final.
Williams beat Johanna Konta 6-4, 6-2 on Centre Court to end the Brit’s best ever run at SW19.
She will now face Muguruza, who dispatched Magdalena Rybarikova in just 64 minutes in the first semi-final to book a place in her second final here.
Last time, she faced Serena but lost in straight sets and Venus, playing in the final for the ninth time, admitted she would be in touch with her sister for tactical advice.
“We both play really well on grass,” Venus said. “Serena is always in my corner. I’m going to have to ask her for some pointers.
“Usually it’s her in these finals so I’m trying to represent the Williamses.”
Serena is missing Wimbledon, where she has won the last two titles and seven in total, as she prepares to become a mother for the first time.
And Venus, who has faced her sister four times in the Wimbledon final, revealed she is suffering the effects of her absence.
“I just wish she was here,” Venus added. “I wish she could do it for me but now I have to. I missed her terribly. I missed her.
Venus will be hoping to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title for a sixth time, at 37 she is four years older than Martina Navratilova, the oldest women’s champion of modern times, when she won in 1990.
But then after the extraordinary life Venus has led thus far, perhaps we should not be surprised if there are more dramas to come.
