Wike urges Rivers voters to back Tinubu in 2027 to “sustain progress”

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on voters in Rivers State to support President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027, saying the state has never enjoyed as much federal attention as it is currently receiving under the present administration.

Wike made the appeal on Tuesday during a “thank you” visit to Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he met with political leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders.

The former Rivers governor said Tinubu’s government had shown “unprecedented attention” to the state through key developmental projects, strategic appointments, and human capital development, arguing that continuity in 2027 was necessary to consolidate the gains.

According to him, “the Rivers people never had it this good,” adding that sustained political support for Tinubu would further position the state for greater benefits.

He acknowledged that the level of federal focus on Rivers was attracting “envy from every quarter,” but maintained that backing Tinubu’s re-election bid would “take Rivers to greater heights.”

Wike explained that his visit to Degema was primarily to express appreciation for the people’s support during previous electoral battles and political transitions, and to solicit their continued loyalty ahead of the next presidential election.

He urged residents to replicate in 2027 the level of backing they gave to his political direction in 2023, which saw Rivers play a pivotal role in Tinubu’s emergence.

Earlier in his remarks, Mr Peter Abe, the member representing Degema in the Rivers State House of Assembly, commended Wike for what he described as consistent and firm leadership that had benefited communities across the state.

Abe said all communities in Rivers were “witness to what the minister did in 2023,” stressing that his political decisions that year were “beneficial to all people in the state.” He assured Wike that Degema voters were ready to follow his directives in 2027.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Degema Local Government Council, Michael Williams, pledged the council’s “continued support” for Wike and President Tinubu, insisting that all political and community structures in the LGA would mobilise for Tinubu’s re-election.

Williams noted that Wike’s initiative to back Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023 had “brought progress in the state,” adding that supporting the president’s second-term bid would “sustain the progress” already recorded.
