Why varsities should train students to become entrepreneurs – Bishop Adelakun

In a bid to position Nigeria among the top nations, Chancellor of Dominion University in Ibadan, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, has emphasised the importance of training students to become job creators rather than job seekers.

Speaking at the university’s fifth matriculation ceremony, he stressed the need to impart entrepreneurship mindset to students right from the campus before they graduate.

Adelakun, who is the Presiding Bishop of Victory International Church, was optimistic that by instilling the mindset, graduates would have the skills and knowledge needed to make a positive impact in the society.

He emphasised that students would need the right entrepreneurial skills as tools to thrive in a competitive environment. He added that with the right mindset and skills, students could go on to create opportunities for themselves and others, towards contributing to the growth and development of the nation.

His words: “We want to raise graduates, who will not be job seekers but job creators from Dominion University. We want to impart into them, that entrepreneurship mindset right from the campus before they graduate.

“My charge to the new students is to make choices that will affect their future positively and not to wish that things will go well without making choices that are in line with their wish. Also, I want to implore them to be disciplined and to be focused on their academics so as to have the best result at the end of the day.”

Guest speaker, Dr. Olumide Emmanuel, a real estate mogul, further highlighted the significance of having an entrepreneurial mindset for personal and national transformation. He encouraged students to cultivate skills for success and to always strive to make a difference in their areas of expertise.

In the paper entitled: ‘The Entrepreneurial Mindset: Cultivating Skills for Success’, which he presented on the occasion, noted that “having an entrepreneurial mindset is very important for personal and national transformation.

“I believe that the university is all about raising transformational leaders and we need them to have the right kind of mindset that will make them go out there and make a difference.”

The Vice Chancellor of Dominion University, Prof Abel Olorunnisola, also reiterated the importance of taking advantage of the knowledge and skills being imparted by lecturers. He urged students to remain focused and to build the right character and skills necessary for success in their academic and entrepreneurial pursuits.
