The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, has emphasised the importance of peaceful protests as a vital element of democracy, promoting accountability and respect for constitutionalism.

Udeze made these remarks during his keynote address at the maiden International Conference of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University’s Department of History and International Studies. The conference theme was “Democracy, Protest, and Governance in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.”

The Speaker expressed concern over the disregard for constitutional principles by some Nigerian political leaders, reiterating the constitutional right to peaceful protest and assembly. He argued that peaceful protests become necessary in the face of frustration, corruption, and intimidation from political leaders, especially when leadership fails.

Udeze highlighted the significance of peaceful protests in facilitating dialogue between leaders and citizens, fostering a healthy democratic practice. He also emphasized the crucial role of the legislature in a democracy, stating that without it, democracy would cease to exist.

He urged young people to resist the “japa syndrome” of seeking opportunities abroad and instead focus on engaging in the democratic process. He emphasized the importance of young people asking critical questions and seeking to take power from the older generation to ensure the survival of democracy.

Acting Head of Department of History and International Studies, Sir Chijioke Okoye, commended the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kate Omenugha, for her support to the department and her visionary leadership that has enhanced the university’s international standing.

Okoye explained that the conference aimed to promote the exchange of academic ideas, particularly in the context of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, addressing issues such as democracy, insecurity, and other challenges.

Distinguished personalities were honoured with awards of excellence, including Anambra State Commissioner for Power and Water Resources, Julius Chukwuemeka, who chaired the event. Others recognized included Nze Kaosiso Ibemesi, Chief Uchenna Okoli, Chief Uche Oduche, and Lt Col. AG Nandang, Commander of the 14 Field Engineering Regiment, Onitsha.
