Ezekiel Olorunfemi popularly known as Small Jesus has revealed what made him unique as drummer.
In this interview, he shared his experience as gospel drummer and other related issues.
Small Jesus, could tell us about about your background and how you got started in music?
My journey in music began at the age of 12 ,when my dad inspired me to become a talking drummer, my father as a pastor usually pays talking drum at the small church where he was in charge of , my father bought a talking drum for me and provided a music instructor to train me (Seyi Oyewale) as I found inspiration in the melodies of greats like king sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey and Yinka Ayefele.
Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, I was drawn to the talking drum, and from there, my passion for music blossomed.
How would you describe your musical style?
I would describe my musical style as a combination of gospel and soul, infusing my music with traditional African rhythms and melodies. I endeavor to create music that reverberates with the soul and uplifts the spirit.
Can you share with us some memorable moments from your musical journey?
One of the most memorable moments for me was the time i was given a contract at (Afmobi Nigeria Limited) and being paid for the contract, and also when I was given the opportunity to talk to thousands of people at a TV show(Saka Television) about my music career which was really inspiring.
Are there any specific challenges you’ve faced as a talking drummer, and how have you overcome them?
Yes, the challenging part was getting my hands in tone to the drum as a talking drummer and also when I was learning how to build drums like Bata, Omele-Gangan, Omele-Bata and , Gan gan itself . It was tedious, but I later thank myself for not giving up, I build my drums myself , train people and sell to customers abroad .I also engage in drums repairs,I coach people people who are interested in learning , building and playing these kind of drums.
what can your fans expect from you in 2024?
I have a lot of great stuff with creativity unfolding in 2024, including my sisters first album launch, which I laid the percussion part, I’m really excited about. I’ve been working hard on some new contents that I believe will lift souls on a deep level.
