From Okwe Obi, Abuja

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the protection of migrants and dismantling trafficking networks.

The government, through the Honourable Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijjani Aliyu Ahmed, stated this at the Joint Thematic Meeting of the Rabat, Khartoum and Niamey Processes in Lagos State.

The event was coordinated by the process coordinators, and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) showcased national strides in reinforcing border management, strengthening protection mechanisms, improving identification systems, and enhancing accountability for criminal networks.

He said: “Nigeria is determined to turn the dialogue into concrete results that protect migrants, dismantle trafficking networks, and enhance reintegration systems.”

He also announced that Nigeria will launch a knowledge product on sustainable reintegration as one of the tangible deliverables of its chairmanship, designed to support partner countries with practical guidance and evidence-based approaches.

He thanked France, the European Union, and ECOWAS for their partnership throughout the process, and invited all delegates to maintain the momentum ahead of the Senior Officials’ Meeting, which will take place in Abuja in January 2026.

At that meeting, he disclosed that Nigeria’s tenure will be formally reviewed, and Switzerland will be welcomed as the incoming Chair of the Rabat Process.

“For the global migration community, Lagos was more than a venue. It was a symbol of resilience, collaboration, and renewed commitment to humane, coordinated, and development-driven migration governance.

“Nigeria remains committed to fostering safe, orderly, and regular migration, strengthening partnerships with African and European governments, and upholding the dignity and rights of migrants everywhere,” he added.
