Binaebi Beckham Edotimi and Ebi Fritz Edotimi, the creative geniuses behind the wave-making fashion brand, BinaEbi Elegant Ensembles, have two things in common.

One, as siblings, their partnership was forged in heaven. Two, the duo are endowed with abundant creative talents and passion for fashion and style. Little wonder their fashion brand, BinaEbi Elegant Ensembles, within a short time became a pacesetter in the industry.

According to the pair, their boundless creativity and shared love for fashion had inspired the birth of their fashion line. In the words of Ebi Fritz, “BinaEbi Elegant Ensembles was founded on a shared love of fashion, a desire to produce distinctive and timeless designs that reflect our African heritage. Besides, we both grew up in an environment surrounded by traditional African textiles and designs, and we wanted to merge these components into modern fashion that would appeal to people all over the world.”

BinaEbi became a leader in the creative industry because of its unique selling point. Hear Beckham: “What distinguishes BinaEbi Elegant Ensembles from other fashion brands is our dedication to crafting one-of-a-kind and distinctive outfits inspired by the beauty and richness of African culture – with a mix of designs ranging from cyberpunk to traditional.

We believe that fashion should be a celebration of uniqueness and self-expression, which is why we attempt to imbue our designs with a unique sense of vibrancy, colour and inventiveness.”

For their unique designs, the brothers derive inspiration from their environment and events unfolding around them. “All we need is an open mind to see it. Art, nature, music, and culture are all sources of inspiration for us. Our own experiences and feelings also serve as sources of inspiration. Even the smallest things, such as a specific hue or texture might trigger an idea,” they chorused.

For the Edotimis, fashion is a method of self-expression through clothing, accessories, and personal style. While style is the manner in which fashion is carried out, they both agreed that fashion and style are about self-expression and creative exploration.

To the duo, renowned Nigerian and international fashion icons stand as their mentors and role models. On the list are Herant, Deola Sagoe, Orange Culture, Rick Owens, Stella McCartney, Turnbull & Asser, Stella Jean and Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour. All these creative eggheads have made significant contributions to the fashion industry, while consistently pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

Even though, the future looks bright and glittering for the fashion entrepreneurs, they bemoan the litany of woes limiting the growth of the industry in Nigeria. “As fashion entrepreneurs operating in Nigeria, we face a number of challenges that are unique to our industry and location. However, we believe that these challenges present opportunities for us to innovate and create solutions that will help to grow the fashion industry, and elevate our brand on a global scale,” they admitted.

Still on the difficulties being confronted, the fashionistas said: “One of the most significant challenges we face is a lack of infrastructure, particularly in manufacturing and distribution. There is a lack of dependable and efficient power supply, which can cause production delays and cost increases. Furthermore, there is a scarcity of skilled labour and modern equipment, which may have an impact on the quality and consistency of our products. Another challenge we face is a small local market, which can make scaling our business and achieving profitability difficult.”

But in spite of these obstacles, they remain optimistic and proactive, vowing to overcome them.

Like most entrepreneurs, the siblings have a fair share of memorable and unpleasant experiences. “We’ve had our fair share of noteworthy and awful experiences as fashion designers. One instance that comes to mind is when we were designing a collection for a high-profile fashion show. We had been working long hours to have things ready on time, and the pressure was on. On the day of the event, however, we discovered that one of the outfits was gone.

“We looked everywhere for the dress, but it was nowhere to be found. We felt sick to the stomach when we realized we had made a mistake and left the dress at the studio. It was a memorable, and at the same time, terrible experience because we would have disappointed not only ourselves, but also our staff and the public, who were excited to see the collection,” they recounted.

However, the fashion odyssey of both Binaebi Edotimi and Ebi Fritz Edotimi has thus far been one of discovery, learning and growth. From their early days of experimenting with various styles and fabrics, to their most recent experiences of designing for customers and cooperating with other fashion experts, every step of the journey has been an opportunity to develop their craft and expand their vision.

But then, their ultimate goal is to become Nigeria’s fashion industry powerhouse, developing designs that inspire and empower individuals to express themselves via their garments. “We are devoted to making a good impact on the industry, and helping to define the future of fashion, whether through our own brand or partnership with other designers and fashion leaders,” they enthused.
