The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has asked secondary schools without computers for their students to write the May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to purchase the new tablets introduced by the council for CBT exams.
WAEC Head of National Office (HNO), Dr Amos Dangut, disclosed this while monitoring the ongoing WASSCE for private candidates, 2026, first series in some CBT centers in Lagos.
Dangut gave a pass mark to the ongoing exam for private candidates, 2026, first series and lauded the candidates and the supervisors for their good conduct.
The HNO told newsmen after the monitoring that the council wrote to schools without computers to purchase its newly introduced tablets.
His words: “WAEC has introduced tablets for the CBT exams. The tablets were test run recently at WAEC CBT center in Ogba and the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa monitored the exam and saw the tablets being used for the first time. He commended the innovation and recommended it to schools.
“The conduct of the CBT exam for private candidates, first series has been peaceful and students comported themselves. The environment is conducive for the CBT exam and I have not encountered any challenges in the two centers I monitored.”
According to him, over 10,000 regular candidates registered for the exam and revealed that many “walking-in-candidates” have registered for the exam.

“This morning, “walking-in-candidates” registered for the exam. These candidates are with one or two deficiencies in a paper. These sorts of candidates can register as walking-in-candidates” and write the exam.
Dangut said reports from states indicate the exams are being conducted hitch-free and that the council has put in place things necessary for the candidates to write and excel.
The WAEC boss observed that with CBT exam, candidates are not expecting tips or waiting for ‘expo’ to aid their performance rather they are focused to do well through their individual efforts.
He disclosed that the exam is being monitored via the use of technology, adding, “even after the exam, during marking the council can fish out candidates that cheated. The consequences for exam malpractice are stiffer penalty.”
The HNO confirmed that it is sixth times WAEC have conducted exams using CBT, stating, “we have written to schools with facilities and do not have computers to reach out to use for our tablets.”
Dangut assured the candidates that WAEC will release the results soonest, adding, “it will be less than our stipulated 45 days.”
The centers visited are WAEC CBT center at Ogba and Mount Gilgal CBT center, Igando. The candidates wrote General Mathematics paper 1 (objective) and 11 (essay) during the monitoring.
The WASSCE for private candidates, 2026, first series commenced on Wednesday, January 28th and will end on Saturday, February 14th, 2026 with Civic Education 2 (essay) and paper 1 (objective).
