WAEC accuses schools, supervisors of extorting candidates in ongoing WASSCE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) on Monday said it received alarming reports of supervisors and some schools extorting candidates under various pretexts in the ongoing May/June 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examinartion (WASSCE)

In a statement by the acting Public Affairs of WAEC, Mrs. Moyosola said the extortion of candiadtes including transportation of scripts, welfare packages, and unauthorized “cooperation” fees.

The council also observed cases where schools demand payment for KAPEK calculators already provided by WAEC at no cost to candidates.

She disclosed that the council condemned these practices as illegal, unethical, and a direct threat to the integrity of WASSCE.

According to her, the Council directed school proprietors, principals, supervisors, and invigilators to comply with the no collection of money from candidates or parents for any examination official.

“Immediate reporting of any extortion attempt to the Zonal Coordinator/Branch Controller or via: [email protected] and [email protected] and no harassment or intimidation of candidates in any form.

“Schools or officials found violating these directives will face strict sanctions, including derecognition, blacklisting, prosecution and referral to relevant authorities for disciplinary action,’’ she stated.

Adesina explained that WAEC remained committed to protecting the integrity of its examinations and safeguarding the future of the Nigerian child.

The council said about 1,959,636 students from 24,207 public and private schools are writing the school examination nationwide, out of this figure, 958,564 candidates (48.92%) are male, while 1,001,072 candidates (51.08%) are female.
