Varsity crisis: ASUU leader rules out graduation, exams computing for students
From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
Many public universities in the country will not graduate their students this year and early next year as lecturers have resolved not to mark exams scripts or compute results following the unresolved issues between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union University (ASUU), one of the union leader revealed.
ASUU Chairman, University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Chapter, Dr Abubakar Saidu revealed in an interview with some journalists Tuesday.
UNIMAID, like some universities, strated the second semester examination shortly after ASUU called off its eight month old strike last month. But Saidu said lecturers wont mark the students exams scripts.
Members of ASUU will not mark the current examination scripts. They will also not submit the results of both the first and second semesters of the 2020/2021 academic session,” he declared.
Beside, he said there wont be computation of academic status by coordinators of each level of academic programme particularly
“Current final year students will not be graduated as departmental and faculty boards and the university Senate will never consider the results of the 2020/2021 session,” he maintained.
He said there decision was based on the government refusal to pay full salaries to the lectures. “If government says no work no pay; we also say no pay no work,” he declared.
He urged President Buhari to issue directive for the reversal of the policy on salary payment for varsity lecturers.
