President Bola Tinubu has urged young Nigerians to wield their growing digital influence with responsibility, warning against the dangers of misinformation on online platforms.
Addressing a gathering of digital creators, tech entrepreneurs, and social media influencers on Friday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu acknowledged the creativity and ambition driving Nigeria’s tech ecosystem and emphasised that this digital revolution is “redefining what is possible for this country.”
“You are not waiting to be invited into the future. You are building the future,” the president told the audience, noting that “new media is no longer an accessory to our national life. It is fast becoming a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change.”

Highlighting the pivotal role young Nigerians play in shaping the nation’s political and social landscape, Tinubu said: “Your generation has understood this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, to educate, and to demand accountability.” But he cautioned that “as this influence grows, so too must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility.”
Urging creators to build businesses that generate employment, nurture unity, and promote positive content, the president emphasised: “We are in a world where disinformation spreads easily. Verify before you amplify, please. Let the digital space reflect the values that bind us together as a people: honesty, compassion, discipline, and patriotism.”
He clarified what true patriotism means, stating: “Patriotism is not about slogans and political theatre. It is about what will contribute to the common good. Every app and every story you tell, every brand you build is a statement to the world about who we are and what we stand for as a nation.”
Addressing government initiatives to support the burgeoning digital economy, Tinubu said: “This administration understands the importance of this new frontier.”
