The United States Secret Service has launched an investigation into the shooting that disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night.

The incident occurred near the main security screening area at the Washington Hilton, where guests were being screened before entering the annual event.

In a statement, the agency said it is working with the Metropolitan Police Department to determine exactly what happened and whether any additional security measures are required.

“All of our protectees are safe,” said Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s chief of communications.

He added, “We will provide updates as they become available and confirm information. Our teams are on the ground assessing the situation and investigating.”

Authorities confirmed that one suspect has been taken into custody, while officials continue to assess the condition of those affected by the shooting.

The incident has renewed concerns about security at high-profile public events in the US capital, particularly those attended by senior government officials, diplomats and media executives.
