US migrants who used Biden-era app to self deport

Biden-era app for migrants

Migrants in the United States who got temporary permission to stay in the country through the CBP One app under former President Joe Biden are to leave immediately.

Per US media reports, “formal termination notices” have been issued to certain “illegal aliens,” but they did not provide details on how they were selected.

A senior Department of Homeland Security spokesperson who spoke to AFP said, “Formal termination notices have been issued, and affected aliens are urged to voluntarily self-deport using the CBP Home App.

“Those who refuse will be found, removed, and permanently barred from reentry.”

Migrants were allowed to schedule appointments at certain southwestern US ports of entry in January 2023 in a move that was part of Biden’s humanitarian parole strategy.

The decision to self deport affects over 930,000 migrants, according to National Public Radio.

Further entries through the CBP One app were cancelled by President Donald Trump on the first day of his second term in office.

The move blocked access, which allowed migrants in Mexico to make appointments with US officials at designated border crossings, where they could apply for temporary residency.

“Canceling these paroles is a promise kept to the American people to secure our borders and protect national security,” the DHS spokesperson noted on Tuesday.
