US launches powerful strikes on Iran over Strait of Hormuz ship attacks

By Lawrence Agbo

The United States military on Tuesday launched what it described as “powerful” strikes against Iran in retaliation for attacks on three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement posted on X, US Central Command said the operation was carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and was intended to impose “heavy costs” on Tehran for targeting maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

“The US strikes are in response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting the Strait of Hormuz,” the military said.

US Central Command further accused Iran of violating a ceasefire that took effect on April 8, describing Tehran’s actions as “unwarranted, dangerous, and a clear violation of the ceasefire.”

Despite the ceasefire agreement, tensions have persisted in the Gulf region, with reports of sporadic attacks on commercial vessels and retaliatory military actions.

Tuesday’s operation marks the first US strike on Iran since a series of air raids conducted late last month, which Washington also said were launched in response to attacks on commercial shipping linked to Iranian forces.

The latest escalation raises fresh concerns about security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supplies passes.
