United States Representative Ilhan Omar has clinched the Democratic Party nomination for a fourth term, solidifying her place as a key figure among progressives within the party. According to a Reuters report, Omar’s victory in Minnesota’s 5th District Democratic primary on Tuesday comes amid a challenging season for progressives, as two of her fellow “Squad” members faced defeats in recent primaries.

Omar triumphed over former Minneapolis city council member Don Samuels, with the latest tallies from the Minnesota Secretary of State showing her leading with 56.2% of the vote compared to Samuels’ 42.9%. Despite a spirited campaign, Samuels conceded the race, acknowledging Omar’s win but noting that some constituents still feel disconnected from her leadership.

A crucial factor in Omar’s victory appears to be her substantial campaign fundraising efforts. Since the 2022 election, Omar amassed $6.8 million, a sum that far exceeded the typical fundraising for House members and dwarfed Samuels’ $1.4 million. Political analysts, such as Carleton College’s Ryan Dawkins, credit Omar’s strong ground game and financial advantage as key to her success in the primary.

Omar, who gained national attention as one of the four progressive women who formed “The Squad” after their election in 2018, is now poised to win the general election in November. Despite her progressive stance, Omar has occasionally clashed with her party, notably voting against President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill in 2021 due to unmet promises on social programs. As the Democratic Party faces internal challenges and a shift away from some of its more left-leaning policies, Omar’s win underscores the ongoing influence of progressive voices within the party.
