The Senate has urged the urgent redeployment of well-armed military personnel to Northeast Nigeria to counter the resurgence of Boko Haram activities in Borno and Yobe States. Lawmakers emphasised that troops must be equipped with modern technology and adequate resources to tackle the growing threat effectively.

The call followed the adoption of a motion titled “The Resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe States” during Tuesday’s plenary session. Sponsored by Senate Chief Whip, Senator Tahir Mongunu, and co-sponsored by Senators Mohammed Ali Ndume, Shehu Kaka Lawan, Musa Mustapha, Ahmad Lawan, and Ibrahim Mohammed Bomai, the motion highlighted the escalating security challenges.

Leading the debate, Mongunu recalled that Boko Haram once controlled two-thirds of Borno’s Local Government Areas, but military and civilian Joint Task Force efforts reclaimed these areas, restoring peace. However, after relative stability, the military shifted focus to the Northwest to combat kidnapping and banditry, leaving the Northeast vulnerable.

“The insurgents have employed more modern technology, including the use of drones, to unleash attacks on villages and communities in the States,” he said, noting their use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that cause high casualties and disrupt movement.

Mongunu cited recent attacks, including one on Monday, May 12, 2025, in Marte, Monguno LGA, where insurgents killed over 12 soldiers, and another early Tuesday in Gajiram, Nganzai LGA, underscoring the need for military reinforcement. “A strong presence of the military in the Northeast zone will effectively curb a resurgence of Boko Haram,” he stated.

The Senate approved the motion, mandating the Committees on Army and Air Force to ensure compliance with the redeployment and equipping of troops.
