As December lights glow across Uyo and cultural rhythms spill into the night air, the atmosphere in Akwa Ibom is unmistakably festive. But beneath the festivities lies a deeper evolution, one defined by economic strategy, cultural revival and the visionary leadership of Governor Umo Eno.
The opening of the Christmas Unplugged 3.0 Festival, a 32-day cultural and tourism showcase, is not just an entertainment programme; it is a window into how the state is aggressively harnessing its human, cultural, creative and natural endowments to build a diversified economy.
This year’s festival, flagged off at the Christmas Village in Unity Park, marks another milestone in the Governor’s expanding tourism blueprint. With thousands of visitors expected, an emerging creative economy taking shape, and the holiday season now branded as a signature national attraction, Governor Eno is positioning Akwa Ibom as one of the country’s most promising tourism and investment destinations.
In his remarks at the festival opening, Governor Umo Eno described tourism not as a luxury sector, but as “a central pillar of Akwa Ibom’s economic vision.”
With the Victor Attah International Airport now designated for international operations and Ibom Air becoming one of Nigeria’s most reliable airlines, Akwa Ibom has built the aviation infrastructure necessary for sustained tourism growth. The ease of access, combined with safe roads and improving hospitality services, has turned the state into a natural hub for leisure, conferences, holidays and business travel.
From the lush hills of Itu to the endless coastline of Ibeno Beach, and from the cultural heritage of Ikot Abasi to the serene riverine communities of Eastern Obolo, the state is steadily curating experiences that highlight its attractiveness. Christmas Unplugged 3.0 leverages these assets, drawing thousands to Akwa Ibom and stimulating the local economy through hotels, restaurants, concerts, markets and mobility services.
What began three years ago as a creative experiment has evolved into one of Nigeria’s largest end-of-year cultural festivals.
Governor’s Adviserr on Tourism, Sir Charles Udoh, recalled that Christmas Unplugged emerged from a simple idea: to showcase Akwa Ibom’s hospitality, culture and talents while stimulating seasonal economic activities. Today, it is a thriving platform with measurable impact. On the specifics, there has been massive influx of visitors, generating revenue for small businesses in the state, also there is Youth engagement through performances, exhibitions and creative showcases, and Cultural expression for communities across all local government areas
This year’s edition is expected to attract the largest participation yet, with more artisans, cultural troupes, entertainers, food vendors and entrepreneurs earning income throughout the 32-day celebration.
One of Governor Eno’s distinctive leadership traits has been his emphasis on community participation. He has consistently stated that tourism must not be limited to hotels and airlines, but must empower: village craft markets, local dancers and performers, rural tour guides, small restaurants and street-food vendors, and fashion designers, artisans and event professionals.
By ensuring that every local government area showcases its culture during Christmas Unplugged, he has turned the festival into a state-wide movement and not just an Uyo-based event.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, underscored this point, noting that the ARISE Agenda, a cornerstone of Governor Eno’s development framework, has broadened opportunities for rural and urban creatives alike. Tourism, he noted, is no longer a sector for elites but a doorway for ordinary people to earn sustainable income.
The tourism drive is not happening in isolation. It is interconnected with wider reforms and initiatives across the state. The internationalisation of the airport and the continued expansion of Ibom Air have improved passenger traffic, attracted private hospitality investments and boosted the state’s profile as a destination of choice.
The Head of Service, Mrs. Elsie Anietie Peters, acknowledged that the Governor’s consistent welfare package, including the 13th-month salary, will enable workers to participate more fully in the festivities, thereby expanding local spending power during the peak tourist season.
In the same vein, Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Udeme Otong, praised the Governor’s innovative approach, confirming the Assembly’s readiness to support tourism initiatives in the 2026 budget. This alignment between the executive and legislature creates stability and accelerates implementation.
Another major stakeholder, ALGON Chairman, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, reaffirmed that all LGAs are deeply invested in ensuring the success of Christmas Unplugged 3.0, a sign of the Governor’s collaborative governance style that strengthens decentralised development.
While tourism is a major entry point for economic expansion, Governor Eno’s broader strategy aims at long-term transformation. His administration is also promoting agro-tourism, blending agriculture with visitor experiences
Exploring film and entertainment tourism, capitalising on growing creative industries, developing coastal tourism around Ibeno, Okobo and Mbo, also investing in rural roads to open up hidden attractions and strengthening safety and emergency services to support visitor confidence, are part of the strategy.
His focus on peace, hospitality and cleanliness are also intentional, foundational qualities that position Akwa Ibom as one of Nigeria’s most comfortable states to live, work and visit.
The opening day of Christmas Unplugged 3.0 was a colourful display of music, dancers, fashion, cultural performances and fireworks. But the celebration is merely the most visible expression of a shift occurring under Governor Eno’s leadership.
From tourism corridors to agricultural value chains, digital innovation to rural development, Governor Eno is steadily moulding a vibrant, opportunity-rich Akwa Ibom.
Governor Umo Eno’s leadership is proving that development does not always start with megaprojects. It can begin with culture, creativity, people and the intelligent harnessing of local potential.
Through Christmas Unplugged 3.0 and the wider ARISE Agenda, he is using tourism as an economic catalyst, empowering thousands of families and positioning Akwa Ibom as a model of peaceful, inclusive, destination-driven growth.
As the lights of Unity Park shine into the December night, they illuminate more than festivities, they illuminate the trajectory of a state built on promise, anchored on vision and energised by a governor determined to unlock every opportunity within Akwa Ibom’s rich and vibrant identity.
