The Vice-Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie, has commended four students of the institution who have distinguished themselves at the global Confucius Institute Talent Show/Spring Festival Calendar Design Contest.

The students, all first-year undergraduates from the Department of Chinese Studies, were selected among the top 50 entries, worldwide, in the highly competitive contest organised within the global network of the Confucius Institute.

The competition attracted participants from Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms across 160 countries and regions, with students submitting calendar designs inspired by Chinese cultural elements under the theme “The Year of the Horse.”

The outstanding UNIZIK students are: Nwoye Miracle Ifunanya, Odezugo Chidera Destiny, Ifebigh Kosiruoluwa Priceless, and Uju Princess Chiamaka.

Their entries, produced under the guidance of Tang Xuefei, a Teacher of Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), at the Confucius Institute, vividly depict iconic symbols of the Chinese Spring Festival, including galloping horses, glowing red lanterns, and celebratory cultural scenes.

Despite being freshmen who only recently began their academic journey in Chinese Studies, the students demonstrated remarkable creativity and cultural understanding, translating their growing knowledge of the Chinese language and culture into compelling visual expressions.

The vice-chancellor described the achievement as a testament to the growing global outlook of UNIZIK students and the university’s commitment to international academic and cultural engagement. He further noted that the recognition highlights the important role of the Confucius Institute in promoting cross-cultural learning and strengthening educational ties between Nigeria and China.

The selected artworks from UNIZIK now stand alongside creative submissions from students around the world, showcasing not only artistic talent but, also, the enthusiasm of African students in embracing global languages and cultures.

As the Chinese language continues to gain prominence across Africa, the success of these students underscores the expanding opportunities available to young scholars of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in the global academic community. Their accomplishment reflects the spirit of youthful aspiration and cultural exchange that the university proudly promotes.
