Nnamdi Azikiwe University has commenced the immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Bond Ugochukwu Anyaehie, who made the disclosure in a chat with our correspondent on Monday, said his administration has pledged its commitment to implementing all the components of the enhanced allowances in the agreement, to be funded through the university’s internally generated revenue (IGR).
Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor said the university has commenced the immediate implementation of the enhanced honorarium for the external assessment of academic staff.
Under the reviewed remuneration package for academic staff of federal universities in the federal public service, released by the Presidency through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission following the agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU on 23 December 2025, the Federal Government approved the upward review of several allowances for academic staff of federal universities.
The document specified that while the Federal Government shall make payments through budget appropriations for industrial supervisions, field trips, teaching practice, and honoraria for external moderation for undergraduates, the university governing councils are to make payments from internally generated revenue (IGR) for postgraduate supervision allowances and honoraria for postgraduate external moderation programmes.
The newly approved enhanced honorarium was increased from N50,000 to upwards of N200,000.

A member of the teaching staff of UNIZIK, Obiajulu Okechukwu, lauded the commitment of the Vice-Chancellor towards implementing the enhanced welfare package. He said UNIZIK under Prof. Anyaehie has made history as the first university in Nigeria to kick-start the implementation, which he noted should be the way to go, considering the biting living conditions of Nigerians battling with a high cost of living without commensurate earnings.
Chairperson of ASUU-NAU, Comrade Nnubia Innocent Obiajulu, also described the development in UNIZIK as a good omen.
“It is a sign of good comradeship between the university management and ASUU if implemented immediately, as the Vice-Chancellor stated. We shall tell the whole world of this positive development if effected and reflected,” he stated.
It would be recalled that the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement was unveiled on Wednesday, 14 January 2025, in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, who described the development as a historic turning point that restores trust and confidence in the nation’s university system after years of strikes and instability.
A major highlight of the agreement is a 40 per cent upward review of university lecturers’ salaries, approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), with effect from 1 January 2026.
The agreement also restructures nine earned academic allowances, which are now clearly defined, transparently earned, and directly tied to specific academic responsibilities such as postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, examinations, and leadership roles.
