The University of Calabar has matriculated 12,800 new students with a charge to them to avoid social vices.
Speaking during the 48th matriculation ceremony, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Florence Obi, cautioned the matriculants to avoid anti-social behaviors, citing cultism, drug abuse, exam malpractice, and internet fraud as threats to their growth and the university’s reputation.
She emphasized the importance of integrity, discipline, and academic excellence saying the university has rules and regulations that must be followed, and that violating them could have serious consequences on their academic career.
“As a centre of excellence, knowledge generation and dissemination, the University is governed by rules and regulations that require your discipline, honesty, hard work and appropriate conduct.

“Abide by the University laws because violation attracts serious consequences on your studentship. You are therefore advised to have a copy of the Student Handbook for guidance,” she said.
She encouraged the freshmen to take advantage of the university’s innovations, including internet connectivity, e-library, and laboratories, to excel in their studies.
Prof. Obi stated that the degree they are seeking would only be awarded if they are deemed worthy in character, learning and also speak up against sexual harassment.
