From Timothy Olanrewaju, Maiduguri
The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has opened a new medical Information Communication Technology (ICT) institute, the first in the country for the training of experts in medical information technology.
UMTH Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Ahmed Ahidjo while speaking at the commissioning of the institute on Tuesday in Maiduguri, said the centre is the first in any tertiary hospital in Nigeria focusing on capacity building and knowledge sharing in medical ICT.
“This institute is established to train personnel in medical ICT, to provide support for healthcare services and research.”
Ahidjo said the institute is named after President Bola Tinubu as demonstration of his commitment to the health sector and the hospital. He commended the minister of health too.
“We appreciate your focus and dedication. As of now, I can say we are getting whatever we asked from the Federal Government,” he said.
The CMD explained that the opening of the institute and commissioning of other projects in the university, is part of events scheduled for the Nigeria’s CMDs Conference holding in Maiduguri this week. Minister of Health and Social Development, Prof Ali Pate noted that the health sector is one of the key focus of President Tinubu. He described the roles of CMDs in various hospitals in the country as pivotal to healthcare service delivery.
