The Bauchi State Government has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day to allow residents to participate in the state’s local government elections.
The declaration was announced by the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, following the decision by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) to hold elections across the state’s 20 local government areas.
Gidado said the holiday covers civil and public servants at the local, state and federal levels working in Bauchi, as well as employees in the banking sector.
According to him, the measure is intended to give eligible residents sufficient opportunity to vote without being constrained by official duties. Workers providing essential services, however, are exempted.
“The decision follows the announcement by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission (BASIEC) fixing Monday, 17th August 2026, for the conduct of elections into the Local Government Councils across the state,” Gidado said.
He urged residents to participate peacefully and comply with electoral laws before, during and after the exercise.

Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Police Command has assured residents of adequate security throughout the election period.
The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent Nafiu Habib, said security personnel had been deployed across the state to protect voters, electoral officials and materials.
The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, warned against electoral offences, including vote buying, voter intimidation, thuggery, ballot-box snatching and disruption of the voting process.
The command said anyone found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted, regardless of political affiliation or status.
It also urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency channels.
