Nigerians are mourning the death of renowned evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, Rev. Dr Uma Ukpai, who passed away at the age of 80.
Known for his fiery sermons, large crusades, and humanitarian works, Ukpai’s name has become synonymous with faith and hope across Africa.
Here are five things to know about the deceased preacher:
1. Founder of a global evangelistic ministry
Rev. Ukpai was the founder and president of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association (UUEA), a non-denominational Christian ministry headquartered in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
His crusades drew thousands of people across Nigeria and other parts of the world.
2. A man of diverse education
Apart from his theological background, Ukpai studied journalism at the London School of Journalism and also earned a degree in theology from a university in the United States.

3. Passionate about education and charity
Ukpai was deeply committed to education and humanitarian service. He established the Uma Ukpai Polytechnic, Asaga, and the Uma Ukpai School of Theology and Biblical Studies.
Through the Uma Ukpai Scholarship Foundation, he supported countless students from poor backgrounds.
4. A man tested by personal tragedy
Despite his strong faith, Ukpai faced heartbreaking moments. He lost two of his children in a car crash on the same day, a story he often shared as an example of perseverance and faith in God’s purpose.
5. A pillar of Pentecostal unity in Nigeria
Rev. Ukpai was one of the founding figures of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). He worked closely with other church leaders to strengthen unity among Pentecostal churches and promote nationwide evangelism.
Until his death, Uma Ukpai remained a symbol of faith, compassion, and dedication to the gospel. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation of preachers and believers across the nation.
