In their bid to enhance the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS) in contributing to the capacity building of Nigerian Military to an enviable academic Master and doctorate level, the University of Ibadan has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja.

Speaking at the occasion, the NDC commandant, Rear Admiral Adeniyi Adejimi Osinowo, described University of Ibadan as center of excellence for strategic training for armed forces where Nigerian nationals and foreigners can obtain both Master’s and doctorate degrees.

He noted that the MoU was most important especially now that the issue of insecurity in the country is taking serious toll, saying the MoU would provide strategic manpower development and upgrade the level of collaboration between the College and the University. “Also, this will provide platform for both serving and retired Generals to be availed with opportunity to study up to doctorate degree and will go a long way to enhance the consummation of the MoU”, he stated.

Corroborating him, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, said the relationship between the university and the College was a veritable example of Public, Public Partnership saying the newly Deputy Vice Chancellor will enhance the strategic partnership.

He added that the university is more concentrated on post graduate programs, a reason they are expanded while supposed number of undergraduate to be taken into the university are reduced from 8000 to 3500. He promised the staffs of the armed forces to do all things to support them on the collaboration.

Earlier in his statements, the pioneer Director of the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies of the university, Prof. Isaac Olawale Albert said MSS programme was formally handed over to the university on June 12, 2017 saying by Tuesday, June 12 (today), it will be one year old. He said the old regime at the Defence College had signed another MoU with the Nigerian Defence College, Kaduna on the programme since 2016.

He said, “It took a great deal of hard work to lobby some  course 25 participants to come to Ibadan. At the end of it all, we succeeded in getting 44 (42 Nigerian nationals and 2 foreigners) of them to Ibadan while over 100 others went to Kaduna.

“Ably coordinated by Prof. Oyesoji Aremu, the MSS programme for course 25 commenced on the October 3, 2017 and it was successfully completed on May 4, 2018.

“In the course of running the programme, we reviewed the professional Master degree programme and got the approval of postgraduate school to commence academic Master and doctoral degree programmes in Strategic Studies.

“On May 28, 2018, the Senate approved our review and the new programmes”, he said.

He added that after the Senate approval, the university appealed to the college to return the MSS programme to Ibadan saying the university got the full support of the commandant and this made it possible to draft the MoU which is being signed on Monday.
